SBC Pastor, David Hughes, Refers to Ex-Church Members as Pieces of Human Excrement

In the sermon excerpt below from David Hughes, pastor of "Church by the Glades" in Coral Springs, Florida, David tells his church members about the church's "back door".  And since the New Testament uses the body/church metaphor, David thought it a good idea to extend the metaphor to churches having a mouth and an anus (the back door) like the human body. And the church members who are not happy, and who ultimately leave the church, like human excrement, they are excreted out the "back door", or the anus, of the church.

Yes, his ex-church members are like human excrement, pooped out as harmful waste from the church's anus. What a wholesome picture, and sound biblical analysis from this "man of God". Maybe if David is looking for the anus of the church, he should look in the mirror.

I first learned about this from Chris Rosebrough's 11/18/14 podcast, and from the Pulpit and Pen blog here.

David thinks he's being cute and hip and cool by referring to a dose of Ex-lax to purge the excrement members out of the anus of the church - but I hope some of David's church members see the manipulation and indeed head out the back door.

And as you see in the video, he tells the remaining church members to not be upset that some members leave, because their exit is proof that they didn't need them in their lives anyways. Pure manipulation.

And more on David Hughes to come - as we cover some of his nutty tithing teachings from his October series on money and tithing.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Watchdog readers, as we move into our 8th year - or 56th in Watchdog years.

  1. I remember someone told me once about a mega church pastor and his wife who came to a new church, and the departure of some members after the new pastor came was referred to as "taking the trash out". Yes, many mega church pastors have such an inflated view of themselves and their "ministry" that anyone who disagrees with them are trash, or excrement like this pastor.

  2. Well, as the very finest, most exalted mind in all of Christendom -- Albert Mohler -- once said, there is no *right* to leave a church for any reason but theological differences, so I think we have to agree that Pastor Hughes is on solid theological ground. It's crazy and degrading claptrap, but he's a bona fide Southern Baptist.

  3. I think that the so called pastor and his wife who referred to people leaving as taking the trash out were from a mega in Memphis. Need I say more?

  4. This is certainly one of the signs of a spiritual abuser. It's the "how-dare-you-leave-the-perfect-church" mantra. My former pastor who sued me was the same way. If someone leaved without having a legitimate reason (their job forced them to move from the area, etc), he never had anything good to say about them - they were the problem because who would leave "God's anointed church" and settle for 2nd best? Ick.

  5. I would be a poop from that guys church flowing out the backdoor than the vomit coming out of his mouth. He obviously has stomach and heart issues to cause that sort of revulsion.

  6. I've heard all sorts of variations on this theme (separating the wheat from the chaff etc etc). At the end of the day, I think these pastors say it to make themselves feel better. If someone leaves "their" church, it reflects badly on them - unless the people leaving are just excrement and then you can dismiss them and convince yourself you've actually gained by them leaving. Seriously sad!

The reported quote came from Donna Gaines, wife of Bellevue pastor, Steve Gaines. She was said to have been heard remarking to a group of people in a hallway of the church a few months after they came that Steve "always has trouble" when they first come to a new church and that they always have to "take out the trash."

Know why I believe she really said that? Because no one, and I mean NO ONE in the 7+ years since I heard that story, not a single one of the most rabid Gaines defenders, has EVER denied it. In this case silence speaks volumes.

  10. Folks, let's be real. No one leaves through the back door. They leave through the same door they came in, which is the front door. So I don't get the whole premise. People come in through the front door and they leave through the front door. Now what?

  11. If you listen to a previous F4F, this church also has an assistant "pastor" that plagiarized a sermon, word for word, from Perry Noble...

I am not surprised by this at all. When your church is a business, it's easy and necessary to get rid of those who don't help the business bring in money...

  12. Michael - yes, the assistant did a tithing sermon perfectly plagiarizing Noble's same sermon just weeks after Noble delivered it. And then Hughes followed that up with his own nutty tithing sermon. I wouldn't be surprised if the members leaving the "back door" comments were aimed at people ticked off over the October tithing series which featured stage props of three monster creatures in cages. Juvenile stuff. Entertainment. A business.

  13. Anon 8:20 - of course they are figurative doors...but it got me to thinking about his statements to the members that they should let those people go and not be sad that they "left you"....if a Christian church member friend leaves our church, they haven't "left" ME...they left the church and they would still be my friends. In this hotshots mind, anyone that leaves, has left all of his/her friends from the church. Stupid.

  14. I have never been a church conformer. If I would have heard this "sermon" which is not a sermon but a tirade, I would have got up and left right then and there. I encourage anyone hearing such a speech or any other non-Bible speech such as this to do the same. It's not true from God's viewpoint and it certainly is not from scripture anywhere. In fact David Hughes is probably excrement in God's eyes. And yes I say this with a lot of joy.

It wouldn't stop this type of behavior necessarily but it would certainly interrupt their drama for a moment. And it would emotionally free the person leaving.

  15. I wonder if he has ever had his back door kicked.

  16. He was attacking mature Christians who desire the preaching of the Word of God to the sheep, being fed "meat" from the pulpit. He referred to them as being selfish and immature, like babies in high chairs. I recall Steven Furtick having the same type of sermon. Perhaps that's where he got his ideas.

  17. Well the church must be constipated, because the biggest piece of crap there, is still in the pulpit.

  18. Watchdog,

Not to be off-topic, but since you cited it in the post, I will say something. As one Christian brother to another, I would highly encourage you not to read Pulpit and Pen. While you may not agree with me, I feel the spirit and atmosphere of their posts are much darker than what you contribute here. If I am off-base, please correct me, but I was put off by what I read there, in a way that I am not when I read your blog.

  19. I find the stage setting behind this man and his "message" to be odd and possibly prophetic! Dark and cave-like, with red flaming walls around him...

    2 Peter 3:7b
...reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

  20. Reminds me of the weakest link argument I used to hear. Mega church preachers all seem to have the same mentality. I am glad I walked out of such a church 20 years ago.

  21. There are some churches that need to be disbanded as they really do not promote Godly doctrine. Some actually insult common sense and still others are nothing more than a cult. Shameful.

  22. Just another false teacher.. abusing the church for his own perverted, disgusting agenda. May God deal with him one day soon "I never knew you". Matthew 7:21-23

  23. Perhaps this sermon/idea was plagiarized from Perry Noble as well?

From an article quoted at this blog post - http://thewartburgwatch.com/2012/12/12/perry-noble-and-his-pastor-fans-are-full-of-it/ :

"Perry Noble say that because the church is a body, and every good body has a back door (I think you know what I mean here!) – it is important for the church not to be constipated. "

  24. Tom,

I see that you believe that any pastor who calls those leaving his church with such terms is terrible. I would agree. I would hope that you would agree that just because a pastor makes such a terrible comment that any Christian who refers to another person (lost or saved) is being just as offensive. I say this because you call this pastor an anus. This is just as wrong.

When you present your commentary on the sins of others but then enter into the fray by calling a pastor a name because he called his ex-people a name just doesn't help your cause for people to be and do right. You even took someone to court for calling you a name.

Please rise above this type of commentary. Present what you believe needs to be presented but please do not become what you stand against.

I attend church by the glades and pastor david is a great communicator and brings the word of Jesus out like no other I know this 1 guy who had a stroke when he was just a month old and has been going to church for like 15 years now he is in his 30s and didn't understand who Jesus or God was until he came to cbg and listen to pastor david he was saved on the spot and baptized a fee weeks later

  29. My family and I have been going there for 3 years off and on. I personally could hardly sit through many of Pastor Hughes sermons, but my husbands and teenage kids enjoy the show :(.
Until this particular series I HAD ENOUGH!!! He is SO FAR GONE , I was sick to my stomach listening to him preach that junk and the analogy he gave of the dining room table with the BIG high chair was all I could handle. My husband, daughter and I now go to a BIBLE teaching church that we love dearly, but my 18 year old son still goes faithfully to CBG every week with a friend. He's going away to a Christian College soon 1 1/12 hours north from us, so I'm believing God will work something in him there and he'll get away from CBG.

  30. Jon L Estes,
Please rise above this type of commentary. Present what you believe needs to be presented but please do not become what you stand against.
Yes, In this comment you made to the commentator is right. It's something I have learned in Joyce Meyer's teaching a long time ago and that is to not put our mouth on another Pastor or church. Although, that's very hard to do when it's your own church and life that it's effecting.
At a young age I was in a huge cult group called The Way International. Messed me up big time. This CBG is not the same but definitely uses the SAME tactics to lure people in, younger generations mainly, and manipulate their minds to keep them in the church. My son see's NOTHING wrong it and he's 18. I was 19 when I joined TWI and got out when I was 27. I'm now 50.
So, I have NO problem warning people of Spiritual Abusers, because it's all for THEIR gain. We as Christians NEED to stand on the Integrity Of God's Word, with no name calling of course, and in love.:)

  31. Wow...
Just now seeing and hearing this. I'm one of the types he refers to as excrement. David Hughes is about as carnal and worldly as it gets. He is spiritually blind and corrupt. I faithfully attended what was once known as "Coral Baptist" in my adolescent years before the exploded into the mega "Churh by the Glades." I still carry guilt because I helped them grow out of control by devoting countless hours inviting every single person I came into contact with. I was so bought in and would even go so far as to say I was one of their best missionaries. As I began to read my Bible and grow in Christ, I became more and more uncomfortable with their practices and who they were behind the scenes. David loves fame and the things of this world and is leading thousands of people astray.

    1. I've been going to CBG since just after Easter 2015. I've been very troubled recently. They did a series based on a Drake album, where the stage was covered in Eye of Horus/All seeing eyes/Evil eyes. They did a service based on Harry Potter, where Pastor Hughes said magick wasn't real, and it was all in good fun, which contradicts scripture. And last week they did a Halloween service, with 2 short poppy Hillsong Y & F songs and no real message, followed by trick or treating. I left feeling very hollow. Thinking of going back to Calvary, which is a mega church, but teaches through expository, and has real worship music.

  32. I volunteered and was baptized at CGB . When the new church was built ( second one on the same property) they began a weight loss series and they sold Pastor Hughes's friend's protein shakes, . Then they had tshirts made that said " mean people suck" and when I questioned why we would wear that t shirt since everyone is God's child and why would we sell shakes and not bibles in the lobby I was shut down. Also when someone asks to speak to pastor David about anything we were told to say- he doesn't meet with anyone and to find another pastor . Who does that? He was an actor before this and I don't think he ever changed . It's a business to him, making deals and making money. I wish I had tithed more to world vision and not my 10% to the church . It all went into props and gimmicks .

  34. This man is doing more for people than you are. Taking what he is saying and twisting it because you don't like him is evil in the sight of God. People who criticize do so because of jealousy. Instead of using your energy and planting doubt in people, plant God's word. God is the judge of teachers.

If you really listen closely, he was talking about people who are mean and plant poison in the church. There are some people like that. They need to go out the back door.

  35. I currently attend CBG. I grew up in a church every Sunday family, was confirmed and relegated to attend as an adult. My enthusiasm for boring, repetitive and mind numbing ceremonies lead me to not attending as frequent. My brother and I received the same letter from our childhood church within a week apart back then stating we were no longer on the membership roll for lack of attendance. What kind of church does that? Had we made sure the collection plate had our offering cards I doubt that letter would have been sent. I swore off the business of church and as I grew watched the likes of church leaders continuously found to be abusing financial collections, writing books, creating a following, buying Multi-million dollar homes, planes, cars all under the rouse of the church profit. I attended CBG after many years of disdain for churchs and their suppose all knowing religious leader and had something click during the service by Pastor David. Their ways may be unconventional, the sermons may stretch boundaries but from my understanding its all under interpretation and perception.

    2 Kings 4:9
She said to her husband, "Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God passing by us continually.

  39. my name is JIM Scaggs I do not like to remain anonymous and I pastor Parkway Freewill Baptist Church in Sebring Fl.I understand the reason why they left is because they wanted and desired more meat and this wolf either refused to or perhaps could not teach them the deeper things of the faith. However keep in mind the mega monster must be aka church has a mega size need that must be satisfied its called money, money is the fuel that feeds the beast, and in order to keep it coming in he has to keep good old Joe in the pew entertained, and that requires bigger and better shows (oh I have heard his so called sermons and they rate right up there with ED young and Osteen). If he starts teaching well the truth he will make pew warmer Joe convicted of his sin and his need for a saviour, and we cant have that why you might ask?because pew warmer Joe will do one of two things get right or leave and will take his wallet with him.I believe the number that left was a fraction of the 15000 or so that attend,so he catered to the goats and let the sheep go.

  40. I am not perfect but I am a Christian solider with the wounds of persecution in my life to prove it. I have both traveled the world extensively and have experienced many supernatural THINGS IN MY LIFE, by way of the HOLY SPIRIT. I have listened to many a sermon by David Hughs when he was pastor of Coral Baptist in Coral Springs. I have listened to clip about ex church members and the commentary that started a fire storm. I personally in my spirit can find no fault with what the man of GOD said. Jesus Told parables about the kingdom of Heaven, they were pictures to reach people, that had elements of human life to make something easier for us to understand. Having said that what was the purpose of David's statement? after watching it. In my spiritual opinion, it was not to demean disrespect or destroy ex church members. To me it felt like he was reassuring newer or weaker members who have not developed their own spiritual discipline and still have elements of worldly programming ie they follow the crowd. In my opinion he was explaining a hard truth, people turn on God, people buy satan's lies and leave the church or get seduced by the doctrine of demons. Proverbs says to leave the way of wisdom is dwell in the "house of dead" so now what? your gonna say GOD is an Illuminati because GOD said some people dwell in the house of the dead? or JESUS..was HE an Illuminati when JESUS told the man "let the dead bury the dead?" I don't think so...the new testament says those who left the church were never really a part of it? so then what..Lay off David Hughs and his comparison. Salvation is supposed to be free and fun. Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty...Stop being an over critical mouth piece for satan, and let THE MAN OF GOD DO HIS JOB! FOR ALL YOUR CRITICIZING...HOW MUCH FRUIT FOR LIFE EVERLASTING HAVE YOU GATHERED? EXACTLY..STOP WATCHING OTHERS SO CLOSELY AND GO SURE UP YOUR OWN ETERNAL ACCOUNT...LEAST YOU BE THROWN IN THE FIRE..THEN ACCUSE GOD OF BEING A PYROMANIC....

1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

John 2:26–27, 'But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don't need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true
