In the video above, which is a portion of some sort of "interview" conducted by one of his staff members, Ed Young gives some additional information about the jet aircraft leased by Fellowship Church. At the bottom is the latest video from Brett Shipp that discusses Young's use of the jet that I blogged about here.
Good to know that Fellowship Church doesn't pay for Ed's jet fuel - but the OTHER churches he flies to and speaks at...they are ponying up the money: JET FUEL FOR JESUS!!
Some Ed Young quotes from the above video:
"I would not have been able to do what I have done over the last, whatever 5, 6, or 7 years had we not utilized private aircraft. I've had the opportunity to speak probably to over 200,000 pastors and leaders here in North America because of that."
Maybe so, but I find it hard to believe that if not for using a luxury jet he wouldn't have been able to do these events. The counter to that logic is: if you had traveled like the average American would travel, how much more money would you have saved that could have done more. I just reject this notion that Ed Young to accomplish his mighty deeds for Jesus has to do it in a private jet.
"We don't use any of the offerings or the tithes to pay for this aircraft. This aircraft is paid for by other resource streams. And usually when I go into a conference or a church to speak they usually pay for the fuel. And we don't own an airplane. We have a charter deal, and we have a lease situation with one."
I think its disingenous to say that a long-term lease means "we don't own an airplane". And I hope someday Young will open the books to show his church that their tithes and offerings are NOT going to pay for his luxury plane travel, and to explain what "other resource streams" ARE able to pay for the millions per year it costs to lease and operate a luxury private jet. If this is true, why didn't he tell his congregation this back when he had the dog and pony show with John Cross and Mac Richard (prounounced "re-SHARD")?
"Why do we have the ability to fly? Did God give us that ability just to share the gospel? I don't know - but again, what the media will say, or what the haters will say is, ok, a Christian, a pastor, whatever, a man or woman who teaches God's word and shares the gospel should not utilize private aircraft. But it's ok for an entertainer, a professional athlete, its ok for a CEO who is selling this widget or that widget...."
Yep, God had man create the French-made Falcon 50 8-million dollar jets for Ed and Bennie Hinn and Kenneth Copeland to "spread the gospel". I suppose according to Young that Brett Shipp, the WFAA reporter is one of those "haters" (this is typical celebrity-preacher speak - any critics are "haters"). Young is misrepresenting the questions asked by Brett Shipp. Shipp is not saying that a pastor should not ever utilize private aircrarft. Brett Shipp wants to know why the plane is being used for trips to exotic locations, and who pays for those; and Brett Shipp might like to know the lease arrangements and who pays for that.
And the more Young calls him a "hater" and doesn't answer any questions, I'm sure the more determined Brett will be to get answers. These reporters can be mighty determined and persistent.
Interesting that Young compares himself to entertainers, professional athletes, and CEOs and questions if private air travel is OK for them, then why not for him. I would counter that by saying the opposite: if even most entertainers and professional athletes and CEOs do NOT fly around on luxury 8-million dollar jets, why does HE, a "called" minister of Jesus Christ, think that HE needs to? Most millionaires utilize commerical flight. It's just too expensive to lease an 8-million dollar jet. But this goes to the mentality of Ed Young and how he views himself as the "franchise player" of the church, as I blogged about several years ago here.
I'm sure that Brett Shipp, the "hater", will stay on the case.
I'm sure that Brett Shipp still has questions. And when he doesn't get answers and only attacks from Ed Young as a "hater", that raises more questions. I hope he finds answers as to why the jet is used for travel to exotic locations, and who is paying for that.
And memo to Ed Young: according to Chris Rosebrough of the Pirate Christian Radio, Chris has spoken to Brett Shipp and knows Brett Shipp is a believer in Jesus Christ. He is a brother in Christ who has questions, he is not a "hater".
Brett, those of us regular lay people out here know you are not a hater. We love you as a brother in Christ, and appreciate the service you are doing by asking questions of Ed Young.
These CEO pastors don't like people who ask questions and call for accountability.
Bloggers and other lay people like me LOVE people like you, Brett, who ask questions, because CEO celebrity pastors ignore our questions and just tell us to leave the church if we don't like something. You, Brett, are a bit more difficult to ignore.
Thank God for freedom of the press. :)
Ed Young needs to grow up. I suppose he never will. Can't believe he is a "minister". Only in this world....
ReplyDeleteIs anybody buying this guy's schtick. And what's up with the "Howdy Doody" character sitting next to Ed, sucking it all up and bobbing his head like a bobble head doll?
ReplyDeletewhat is up with it is that Ed Young is a child.
ReplyDeleteAnd usually when I go into a conference or a church to speak they usually pay for the fuel.
ReplyDeleteSo I guess it's ok if it isn't his church members' tithes and offerings paying for the fuel, just yours if he comes to your church. Nice.
And I bet that when other mega church pastors charter jets to come to his church, then his church pays for it. What a racket these guys have going!
We can start a new 501(c)3 ministry:
ReplyDelete"Jet Fuel for Jesus"
Is anybody buying this guy's schtick. And what's up with the "Howdy Doody" character sitting next to Ed, sucking it all up and bobbing his head like a bobble head doll?
ReplyDelete=================================
Sorry Mr. Ed, not buying it! Even Fortune 500 companies are having their executives fly commercial these days - they've sold off their private planes.
These executives fly thousands of miles every week to perform their jobs - I know, I'm married to one whose average work hours are 12-14 hour days due to his flying hours. If "For Profit" companies don't waste monies on private aircraft THESE DAYS, then most certainly a non-profit church organization shouldn't. Didn't realize there was so many Preachers out there requesting your Pep Talks at the cost of their membership.
"Jet Fuel for Jesus"! Love it !!
ReplyDeleteYou could offer that ministry under the umbrella ministry:
"Perks For Pastors" !!
Any discussion about the necessity for and benefits of an expense such as this - a private jet, should be accompanied by a full financial explanation. In other words, if one is going to justify something, the oosts and benefits should be revealed and discussed so that a proper judgment can be made.
ReplyDeleteThis explanation is only an explanation, in general terms, of why and how the jet is beneficial. Even then, that could be weighed. Couldn't public air travel have accomplished the same thing? If not, explain why.
But beyond the benefits, there is no explanation of the cost. Thus, no cost/benefit analysis can occur.
The mentioning of "other revenue streams" without any explanation, raises more questions.
At the end of the day, it's up to the people who attend that church. I am not going to tell them what they should do.
But I can say that no one on our church staff would be able to do someting like this. The elders would review it thoroughly, and the congreation would know all about it.
Despite all the continued discussion, very little additional information is being revealed in a context that enables a valuation.
Louis
The "hater" label is getting so old. Time to give it a rest. If you stand up for marriage you're a "hater." If you oppose a slaughterhouse being built south of town because of the smell of animal waste, and immigrants will be working there, you're a hater. If you didn't vote for Obama, you're a hater. And now pastors are calling you a "hater" if you ask questions about wasteful spending. That takes the cake!
ReplyDelete"Jet Fuel for Jesus" (Nice Logo)
ReplyDelete1) How many people did Ed Young lead to Christ on using his personal private jet?
2) The sad part is that he missed so many opportunities of sitting next to someone on a commerciaal plane he could have ministered too.
3) Wonder if a Missionary could justify getting on a private plane. Why isn't the SBC giving missionary planes to missionaries. Aren't they the ones assigned to get the gospel out there to people who have never heard.
Dr.Dog this guy is the perfect example of what The Apostle Paul was inspired to write in 2Tim.3-13!!!
ReplyDeleteHe has deceived so many people, that he now believes his own lies;or should I say boast!!!
Not only the money waste but what exactly is he teaching all these other pastors when he travels to speak to thousands? To be like him?
ReplyDeleteHe is a wolf.
Ed Young needs to grow up. I suppose he never will. Can't believe he is a "minister". Only in this world....
ReplyDeleteMay 13, 2010 10:50 AM
Where do you all think he got his start? Daddykins. Ed Young, SR. Former SBC President.
I remember about 30 years ago Dr Adrian Rogers flew down to the Bahamas with a friend of his who owned a private plane. Dr Rogers went because he had an opportunity to witness one on one with Cassius Clay who was having a fight the following day. Another time I recall Dr Fallwell flying somewhere south with a friend of his who owned a private plane.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone out there realize what salaries, insurance, and expenses incur in owing a private plane? They are enormous and I recall Queen Elizabeth giving up her yacht as well. I suppose if you are a celebrity its ok and no rules apply for whatever reason.
" Dr Rogers went because he had an opportunity to witness one on one with Cassius Clay who was having a fight the following day. "

ReplyDeleteI attended Ed's church for 1 1/2 years about 18 years ago when he was just getting mega (Around 2000). At that time, he only asked people to pray in front of the church on Sunday mornings who had a title (Dr, The Honorable, MVP, etc.).
ReplyDeleteWell he made the mistake of asking of my husband to pray. He has a Dr.in front of his name. The week before he was to pray, on the day they were printing the program, my husband called and insisted they remove the Dr. in front of his name in the program. He (hubby) said this was a bunch of nonsense and that we were all the same in church and should drop the titles garbage.
They were not happy and tried to argue it with him. Hubby is as stubborn as me. So, because it would have been to embarrassing to uninvite him, they let the prayer go forward, minus the Dr.
He was never asked to pray again. So, if you want to pray with the big boys, make sure you have a title, or, better yet, a jet!
We have an annual conference that our church sponsors and leads every year. We have pastor's and laypeople from all over our state and many other states attend this conference and we bring in preacher's from across America to speak. We pay for the speaker and his spouse, if she desires to come, the most we have ever paid for two adult roundtrip tickets did not total $1,000.00 I guarantee you that, that is still cheaper than paying for Ed Young to fly one way on his jet. Needless, to say he won't be coming down to speak at our conference anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteLouis - your comments are spot on.
ReplyDeleteCorporations that utilize private jets do so after doing a cost-benefit analysis that shows a net benefit to the shareholders. Its not a "perk" for the CEO himself so he can be "refreshed" on weekends. It is for the entire corporation to use. I worked for a corporation as a mid-level manager and flew on the corporate jet a few times with execs who were going to the same meeting I was.
But the cost benefit analysis would include many factors to show that use of the jet for the corporation can offset commercial ticket expenditures when multiple execs and other employees travel to the same location. Other factors include executive time, benefits of using it for emergency travel (which can be very valuable depending on the company's mission), benefits in courting customers or potential customers, etc. and others.
At Ed's own admission, I don't see this jet being anything other than a personal perk for him, the "franchise" player, to make his life easier.
So to compare his jet travel to that of "CEO's" shows extreme ignorance on his part, and a detachment from reality.
Go get 'em Brett. Get answers. Find the cost. Find the "other revenue stream" that is paying millions every year for this personal perk, if one exists.
And when you do, Brett, you can declare yourself "God's man" getting to the bottom of wasteful spending of "God's money".
And we'll all say "Amen Brother Brett!"
"We don't use any of the offerings or the tithes to pay for this aircraft."
ReplyDeleteSo Ed Young is another false teacher among the thousands who extort money from people through the non-Christian practice of "Tithing?" He is as skilled at distorting and twisting God's Word as the next one.
Rick Warren, one of the most influential men around today says: "If you want to get out of debt, you've got to start tithing 10 percent (paying God) and saving 10 percent (paying yourself)." Eight steps to getting out of debt
Where in the Bible does it teach that Christians have "got to start tithing 10 percent (paying God) and saving 10 percent (paying yourself)."? Where in the Bible does it teach that Christians have GOT to tithe at all?
Start paying God and yourself first?? Nonsense. A blatant contradiction and who would be the first? God or yourself? Yourself or God? One cannot have two firsts at the same time and in the same relationship. And no sinful, corrupt human being can pay God anything. We are the LORD Jesus Christ's debtors. He paid fully for what we owe. Every single thing.
Tithing is not for the New Testament Church, it is not for Christians. Tithing puts people back under bondage. Those who try to be justified by the keeping of the law actually fall from grace. Galatians 5:4You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
Yes, Christians should exemplify generosity as they are able to, and some are more able to do so than others and some are unable to do so at all, financially, due to one reason or another that is between them and God. That is one area where we as Christians can help each other. Many give very generously in a wide variety of ways besides money.
2 Corinthians 9:6The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
Note verse 7: "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." Decided in the heart? 1% or 100%, it is between man and God and it is no one else’s business.
To quote C.I.C. Ministry: "those who command or promote tithing are not following the teachings of the New Testament":
Tithing
Presented by Bob DeWaay and Dick Kuffel Broadcast Monday, July 17, 2006 This program shows that the New Testament does not teach a mandatory tithe after the manner of the Old Testament. Those who command tithing are not following the teachings of the New Testament.

I believe the resource by Mr. Russ Kelly you have a link to on your side bar is an extensive, truthful outgrowth from Mr. Kelly's Ph. D. thesis and book on the whole subject on tithing.
Many of Ed Young’s teachings are awful and he should be ashamed of himself. Yet he carries on, unabated, without a blush.

An also Anon the damage they are doing to believers and unbelievers as a result of their wanton greed is far-reaching;more then we could ever imagine.
Jesus verbally scolded the religious frauds of His day by saying::
"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves , nor do you allow those who are entering to go in."[Matt.23-13]
Then Christ futher along in Matthew chap.23 walked out of the Temple and left it to "MEN":
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!(v37)
"See! "YOUR HOUSE" is left "TO YOU" desolate;(v38)
"for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!"(v39)
Because of the rampant fraud and dishonesty perpetrated by these charlatans, many unbelievers aviod the church altogether(their not fooled),and true believers are sent scattering to look for a true place to worship and fellowship!!!
"WORSE AND WORSE"[2Tim.3-13]!!!
Speaking at least for myself...as an M on the field in Asia, I don't WANT a jet, I don't even want a CAR. But it WOULD BE NICE if the powers that be would give us back our dental and medical care.
ReplyDeleteThat was the one thing I always bragged about when I spoke at Club, especially around Aunt Lottie time. But now, we're forking out money that used to be paid for by our insurance. Yes, we had GREAT insurance!! Maybe better than most people who sacrifice to give to LMO, and to the CP. But it was the ONE thing that we could point to, and KNOW that the conventioned care deeply for their Ms.
Now...I guess too much money is being held in the local clubs to lease jets, build crystal campuses, and cater Dr. Dorothy's Christmas teas...
SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!!!!!
"Our church is NOT for everybody... if you don't like it... go somewhere else..."
ReplyDeleteNow there is a great church slogan. What a way to open up to the world and invite them to seek Christ!
Wow...just wow.
0The point is....tithes and offerings are paying for this "elitest" fiasco of a private plane. Ed mentions that entertainers, athletes and co., CEO's use private planes for their travel. THEY ARE NOT USING TITHES AND OFFERINGS OF CHRISTIANS AND CHURCHES TO PAY FOR THEIR PRIVATE PLANES!!! This is a ridiculous statement made by Ed in trying to defend his wastefullnes spent on himself. Especially when most in his church did not know they were paying for this grandeur. But then maybe Ed IS an entertainer, and CEO. He sure isn't a preacher in my opinion. I've heard him!.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Can Ed do anything about his sloppy appearance? He looks like an unmade bed.
"Our church is NOT for everybody... if you don't like it... go somewhere else..."

Retirement was taken care of on the front end. Some even have contracts that if they are let go for ANY reason, they are given a big lump sum. Which is interesting considering the fact that churches are exempt from labor laws. We certainly did not treat the worker bees with such consideration. They were not even able to receive unemployment if let go.

ReplyDeleteHmmmmmmm. This would make sense. Patterson has been trying to get one of his guys in there for years. Akin goes all the way back to FBCDallas where he was Patterson's protege. Even took over teaching Pattersons SS class for him.
He was described as a hot firebrand back then. Since then, he is more polished and slick.
No wonder so many are going to be deceived in the last days. They are deceived now!
ReplyDeleteAs to preachers getting ready to retire....that's why they are constantly begging, make that demanding money. The know the time is short for them to get the dough, before the gravy train shuts down.
Why does FBC Dallas spawn so many of these Mega mistakes?
ReplyDeleteThis is somewhat off subject, but I think it is symptomatic of what has been discussed here, recently.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Southern Baptist Conventions own sources (Lifeway): In 2009, our total membership has dropped to 16.16 million members. Baptisms did rise to 349,737 up from 342,198. But here is the real kicker. Our primary church attendance was 6.21 million. That means 10 million Southern Baptists do not attend church on any given Sunday. With 45,000 SBC churches that is not a good report. But I think we must look in the mirror to see the problem.

The more I watch and listen to these guys , they are more like stand up comedians that tell made up stories and jokes, then they sound like preachers.
Ten million out of sixteen would be about 64% prefer staying home than attending church. I can remember when it was 80% attend and just 20% stayed home. I would venture that the methods of teaching are the basis of such a drastic decrease. Additionally, there were not so many copies of Bibles available, just mainly the KJV and the older pastors really believed it. Also, they were proud to be local pastors and not concerned with traveling all over to get a "crowd" as they had one already listening and bringing in the lost. Those days are over. The church is nothing more than a social entity and a place to market your business whether it be building homes, selling lumber, bricks, insurance, or legal services and bank financing. You have to admit it definitely has changed. And like someone said, worse and worse.
ReplyDeleteAnon 7:45. Yes, you are correct. Whats such a shame is that the facts contained within the Holy writ are better than anything man could make up. I believe the modern pastor is not interested in learning for himself the BIBLE but more concerned with what may not offend someone like the best seller book or something he heard on tv. They also like to tell you what they learned in their latest trip that you did not go to yet you paid for. Have a nice day and stay home and save your money for a rainy day as it sure is coming.
ReplyDeleteI believe there will soon be less air travel available. The experts claim gasoline prices will be $5 per gallon. I have no idea what jet fuel prices are but thats about 42% an increase. Probably gonna hurt some of these high flyers.

What is not measured and probably cannot be measured accurately is how many true believers are leaving the institutional church. It is becoming more widespread. Some folks are picking up on this and writing about it. One reporter was stunned to find out the ones leaving were serious believers and could not stand the fakiness and focus of the institutional church. The book is "Quitting Church". Barna has also written on this.
Numbers mean little. Most mega's inflate their numbers and so does the SBC. I doubt the 6 mill number. I think that is inflated. What is more, quite a few churches took the word Baptist out of their name and are not reporting numbers to the SBC anymore. However, the sBC reports their old numbers in their totals.
Don't believe everything you read from Lifeway Research.
I would not attend Fellowship Church, but there is no denying Ed Young Jr preaches Jesus as being the only way into the Kingdom. Ed's methods are unorthodox and his creativity turns sappy quickly in my opinion; however, he certainly doesn't preach a false gospel.
ReplyDeleteThese other "revenue streams" are Ed's personal ministries that he owns, the church has never paid for the fuel nor the lease on the plane. I am not saying this is healthy for Fellowship nor for Ed's reputation - but it is not illegal and Fellowship has not been wounded or divided over this.
I have asked before, but have not received any answer from anyone on the following question. But what are the Biblical guidelines on judging others? I think almost all on this blog would be spiritually shocked to do a bible study on this. Look at Jesus' and Paul's blueprints on making judgments on others.
Jason
Jason - Brett Shipp is asking for an explanation of why the jet is used for trips to exotic locations. And who pays for these?
ReplyDeleteIf it is as you say that the "other revenue streams" are used for the jet leasing, operations, and maintenance, then I would hope he opens the books to prove this.
"Judging other" - I would say Ed and his trustees should stop judging those who are asking questions - calling people who ask questions "haters" is not very Christian. I don't hate Ed Young, but think he should be open and transparent with his congregation about how it is that he can afford a lifestyle that includes a private jet for himself.
But I understand asking CEO mega pastors to be open and transparent is like asking water not to be wet, so no answers will ever come forth, unless the questioners are the IRS or Senator Grassley's office.
"I would not attend Fellowship Church, but there is no denying Ed Young Jr preaches Jesus as being the only way into the Kingdom. Ed's methods are unorthodox and his creativity turns sappy quickly in my opinion; however, he certainly doesn't preach a false gospel."
ReplyDeleteDepends on how you define a false Gospel. A false Gospel is anything that is less than the full Gospel. That includes the negative parts of the Gospel truth.
Most megas do not actively preach a 'false' gospel, they simply do not preach the FULL Gospel. If they did, they would empty. People go there to be entertained and to leave feeling better about themselves and to have their felt needs met.
They have to focus on felt needs and life issues in order to grow and maintain the mega. It is show business: Give people what they want. (Which is not the truth)
They call this the Gospel: Getting out of debt, raising kids, marriage, money mgmt, good sex, etc. It is really a "social" me-centered Gospel. And has little to do with taking up your cross and dying to self. In fact, It is ALL about self. It is simply not the full Gospel. The full Gospel would empty the place quick.
They are miles wide and 1 inch deep. It really is quite clever. Satan would never object to this. Remember, Satan knows the power of the full Gospel and hates it.
part 2
ReplyDeleteRomans 2 is clear if we judge others yet do the same thing we will not escape the wrath of God.
(Warnings of wolves is not the same thing as judging. If that is the case, then Paul, Peter and John are guilty of 'judging')
1 Corin 6 is all about proper judgment within the Body:
"o you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life? 4 If then you have judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge? 5 I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren?"
Good question. Are there no wise people in the Body with true discernment who are not protecting their title, position or wealth?
1 Corin 14
28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge."
Paul is talking about orderly worship here and actually recommending that several preach and the others "judge" what they teach. Most pastors hate this one.
If more truth was preached we would not need to make judgments. Look at this scary truth about professing believers in Hebrews 10:
26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,”[a] says the Lord.[b] And again, “The LORD will judge His people.”[c] 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. "
What do the Ed Young's and Ergun Caner's believe about this passage? Does it not convict their souls? Are they hardened to this negative truth concerning willful sin after claiming they have receieved the knowledge of truth?
" But what are the Biblical guidelines on judging others? "
ReplyDeletePlease do a deep study. I will provide some passages to study in context. One important thing to remember that is the opposite of what you hear in most pulpits: We are NOT to judge the outside world. Only those in the Body.
Matthew 5-7
Matthew 5 shows us the 'salt elements' of being salt and light in the World. This is the best description of what a believer will look like in maturity.
Pay close attention to 7:13-23.
7:1-3 is quoted a lot about judging without including verses 13-23. they seem to contradict each other but they do not. Jesus is talking about hypocrisy...if you take chapters 5 and 6 into consideration. You have to read Matthew in full context.
John 7:24. Jesus is telling the Jews in the temple to not to judge with appearances but with 'right judgment'. Look at the context. One has to make a judgment. The judgment is not what is evil.
1 Corin 5
9I wrote to you in my letter(N) not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10(O) not at all meaning(P) the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters,(Q) since then you would need to go out of the world. 11But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone(R) who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12For what have I to do with judging(S) outsiders?(T) Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13God judges[b] those outside.(U) "Purge the evil person from among you."
chapter 5 is the one that is twisted quite a bit. Very few pulpiteers want it to mean what it means. It does not grow huge churches. Ever notice how so many popular evangelists and pastors rail against the culture? Homosexuality, divorce, drugs, drinking, etc? And we all feel good about ourselves because we are not like those 'outside'? This is nothing but a clever distraction from Satan and misuing the Word.
Paul is advising us to judge the inside (The Body) and not the world. We are to evangelize the word. But that is becoming harder to do in this culture because we are hypocrites and the world knows it. We are not proof that being Born Again means we are transformed...changed.
The reason why so many Christians today think that they don't have a right to judge anyone is because they have been indoctrinated with the worldly teaching of "tolerance." Mainly from pastors who teach it is a sin to judge them because of their position.
ReplyDeleteTo the world tolerance means that truth is subjective, and there is no absolute truth. This means no one has to right to tell someone else that they are wrong, because one person's opinion is just as good as someone else's. Therefore we hear such things as, "who are you to judge me, or to tell me if I am right or wrong?"
According to the latest statistics (The New Tolerance, by Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler, pages 173-174) 50% of Christians youth do not believe that an objective standard of truth exists, while 53% of the adults do not believe in absolute truth; Two-thirds of the 70% of Americans who say it is important to follow the teachings of the Bible reject moral absolutes.
This is why many Christians today think that no one has the right to say anything to them, because that is judging them. When you bring this attitude into the church you have to ignore the Scriptures, because they do teach that there are absolute truths.
Scriptures plainly teaches that believers are not to walk around blindly, ignoring sinful behavior or false teaching; and if we do then we are in direct conflict with clear teaching of God's Word. Christians need to take to heart the words of Peter and other apostles in Acts 5:29 when told that we are not to judge anyone, "...We ought to obey God rather than men."
Christians, nor churches can afford to ignore God's Word and turn a blind eye to those who propagate the false teaching that no Christian has a right to judge another. To do so will only lead to confusion and division among the church body, and shows a contempt for God's Word. But we must also acknowledge that when it comes to judging, we need to always check our motives before we say something to another believer. If what we are doing is not based squarely upon God's Word and a love for our brother or sister in Christ, then it is best to keep our mouths shut.
1. Areas that we should withhold judgment on.
ReplyDeletea. When it comes to personal convictions or preferences (NON MORAL ISSUES) on which the Bible has no clear teaching then we should not judge someone who makes those choices. Romans 14:1-23 speaks about not judging another believer because of their eating preferences (vv.1-4), or how they view the significance of special days (vv.5-8). But Paul does make it clear that our opinions or convictions on these matters should not become a stumbling block to other believers, then it would become a moral issue (vv.13-23).
b. We should not judge people just by their outward appearance (John 7:24; James 2:1-4). This is superficial judgment that is often based upon how someone looks or talks, and is not based upon what they are actually doing for the Lord. The problem with this type of judgment is that it usually has it roots in legalism and not Scripture.
c. We should withhold judgment upon another Christian's service (1 Corinthians 4:1-5). The context of this passage is dealing with divisions in the church a Corinth because of factions and false teachers who all calming superiority over the others. As a result some were criticizing Paul's ministry because they felt that he wasn't doing what they thought that he should be doing. The problem wasn't Paul's ministry or what he was teaching, but it was the attitude of some in the church. This doesn't mean that we are not to be discerning about a ministry, but that we are not supposed to condemn others because they are not doing what we think they should be doing. We need to keep in mind that some plant and some water, but ultimately it is God who causes the growth (1 Corinthians 3:1-9). An example of this would be when we start thinking that we could preach or write better sermons than the preacher, or we think that we could do a better job than what someone else is doing in another area of ministry. Or that we think that a person isn't doing something in a way that we think it should be done. When you do things like this, you are in a sense looking at individuals more like chess pieces and not people chosen by God to do the best they can with what God has given them.
d. This last area tends to build off of the other areas, and that is letting our tongues express our opinions about others (James 4:11-12). When we criticize others, we are placing ourselves in the position as judge and pronouncing judgment upon them when we may not know or understand all the details of why someone is doing what they are doing. Again, let me remind everyone that these passages are addressing NON MORAL issues. When it comes to sin, false teaching or ministries, the Bible clearly teaches that we are to be discerning which means we need to make an judgment based upon God's Word.
2. Areas that we should make judgments on.
ReplyDeletea. Christians are to judge disputes between members of the local body of believers so they can settle these disputes (1 Corinthians 6:1-8). This is so that the problem doesn't spill over into the non-believing world, which discredits the church's witness to the lost.
b.The Body is to judge the unrepentant sins of its members, and to take the appropriate actions. Unconfessed sin needs to be publicly judged rightly and condemned (1 Corinthians 5:3-5). The purpose of this judgment is not to condemn, but to restore the sinful believer into useful service (Galatians 6:1-5). If the sinful believer refuses to repent, then we are to break fellowship with them until they do repent (1 Corinthians 5:11-13; 2 Thessalonians 1:8; 3:6). Christ rebuked the church of Thyatira for not judging a woman who was a false teacher. (Revelation 2:20-24).
c. We are to rightly judge the doctrinal teaching of preachers and teachers by God's Word (Matthew 7:15-20; Acts 17:10-11; 1 Corinthians 14:29; Titus 1:10-16; 3:10; Hebrews 13:7; 1 John 4:1; Revelation 2:20-24). Peter and John both told the Jewish leaders to judge what they were saying to see if it was true or not according to God's Word (Acts 4:19). Paul tells the Corinthians to judge what he was saying (1 Corinthians 10:15).
d. We are to rightly judge potential Elders/Pastors and Deacons to see if they measure up to the qualifications given in the Scripture (1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9). The reason why many churches have the problems that they have is because they fail to obey God's Word and appoint people who are not qualified according to God's Word. This means that we have to discern or judge others by God's standards in order to be obedient to God's Word.
e. We are told in 1 Thessalonians 5:14 to "admonish the unruly." In verse 15, we are told to "see to it that no one repays another with evil for evil." So it is clear that we as believers have to be discerning about other believers. This doesn't mean that we are to go around looking for every little speck or flaw, but that when we see people doing things that are clearly unbiblical then we are to speak up and say something.
f. We are to examine or scrutinize ourselves to see if our faith is real (2 Corinthians 13:5-7). This testing is to see if we are truly saved and if we are doing right in the sight of God. We are also told to judge (scrutinize) ourselves before we partake of the Lord's Supper to see if our spiritual condition is correct (1 Corinthians 11:31).
Jason,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your honest and articulate post. However, I must disagree with you as far as the impact of Ed Young jr’s lifestyle on the larger Christian community or body.
Everything we do should reflect our role as ambassadors for Christ and his kingdom. It only takes a glance at statistics nationally and certainly globally to see severe hunger, disease, unemployment, etc. It just seems obvious that as Christians we should be ‘above reproach’ in all we do including our lifestyle and apparent yielding to the temptation of materialism and greed that so surrounds us. For pastors and others to defend such luxury in the lives of our church leaders is more than disappointing; it seems almost blasphemous and is certainly discouraging as I seek to pray the ‘lord’s prayer’ asking for daily bread and the growth of God’s kingdom here on earth.
For him to tell ‘us’ that he has spoken to thousands around the world thanks to the leased jet is no justification, only arrogance in assuming that he alone is needed to go and speak to those thousands.
Whether bloggers, newspapers, TV stations, or folks sitting around the dinner table discuss issues such as this, it can only be healthy and soul searching for all of us.
There is a huge difference between judgment, calling fellow believers "haters" for instance, and discernment and teaching discipline. Judging involves determining is someone is worthy of heaven or hell. I am not in a position to cast judgment on any one but myself. Just as you can only judge yourself. "Do YOU know for sure if YOU were to die today that YOU would go to heaven? "Two will be plowing in the field one will be taken and the other left." Etc. Can you judge the difference? I cannot.
ReplyDeleteDiscernment, on the other hand, deals with judging behavior. Is it right for a preacher to use the gospel to amass great wealth or live an extraordinarily highly affluent life? There is no preacher so important as to need a private jet, period. Likewise, being a pastor is a more than fulltime job. How could he possibly have time to be a pastor and have time for these “other” endeavors?
There are plenty of sermons that deal with the subject of affluent preachers and judging. As Everett Dirksen once said when asked about Lyndon Johnson amassing a fortune over his lifetime of elected service, “It is impossible to only serve in elected office and become wealthy.” The same is true of pastors.
Finally, let’s See What the Bible Really Says About Judging:
"The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment." (Psa 37:30)
"With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth." (Psa 119:13)
"Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy." (Prov 31:9)
Jesus commended Simon, "Thou hast rightly judged." (Luke 7:43)
"Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt show her all her abominations." (Ezek 22:2)
"But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man." (1 Cor 2:15)
"Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?" (1 Cor 6:2)
"Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?" (1 Cor 6:3)
Watchdog and Anonymous 1:21,
ReplyDeleteI hear what both of you are saying. I would tell Ed the same thing I am saying to you, and that is you control your own words, you are judged by Christ for your words, but only you are responsible for those words. In other words, pointing out Ed's judgmental words like "haters" doesn't wipe away our judgmental words.
I think also that it would be wiser for Ed to show the books on the plane, but if he chooses not to then there is nothing illegal about that nor I believe none of our concern if we are not members of that local church.
I would still ask you the same question though - what is the Biblical standard for making judgments on others. It might be a jolting study for many on here.

1 Corinthians 5. You cannot escape it.
Ed Young is described quite a bit in the NT. Some passages for you to study since it seems you do not think rank and file Christians have a right to speak out concerning fake pastors:
Acts 20
Matthew 7
Jude 1
1 Timothy 3
1 John (all of it)
2 Peter 2 (Young makes merchandise of his followers)
Hebrews 10: 26-31
And much more. Read all of it and pay close attention to the letters in Rev.
It is our duty to warn of the wolves and false teachers. If we are not to judge then why are we told to discern rotten fruit?
"I think also that it would be wiser for Ed to show the books on the plane, but if he chooses not to then there is nothing illegal about that nor I believe none of our concern if we are not members of that local church."
ReplyDeleteSo, your standard is what is legal by civil law. By that logic, Christians are not guilty of murder when they abort a unborn baby.
Also, by your logic we have no right to warn folks that Ken Copeland is a false teacher who makes merchanside of his followers because we are not members of his church.
So, by your logic we cannot try to get folks out of cults because we are not members of their "church" and are not allowed to point out anything negative about their leader. Hmmmm. Your logic is not working for me. It is not logical.
Jason, Just because EY talks about Jesus being the only way to Heaven etc. does not mean that he is a Christian.
ReplyDeleteLook at his fruit, that right there will tell you everything you need to know.
His fruit is rotten and it is not Christ bearing fruit.
The fact that he (that I know of) has not repented speaks volumes about what he thinks about God.
IF EY truly belongs to Jesus, then he will eventually get right with him.
"But what are the Biblical guidelines on judging others? I think almost all on this blog would be spiritually shocked to do a bible study on this."
ReplyDeleteWhat a laugh! Here you are setting yourself up as a judge over almost all on this blog. What a hypocrite you are. True?
I am not spiritually shocked about this. I am spiritually angry at all the false teaching, Scripture twisting and rip offs continually going on in the name of my LORD Jesus Christ by false teachers. Ed Young is only one of many who distorts the true biblical gospel and he should be out of ministry, on extended unpaid leave, privately aside with God in humble repentance and pleading to God for mercy. He has made the visible church a laughing stock to the world. He has brought the LORD Jesus Christ and His church into disrepute. He has made a mockery of Christ and His church. And Ed Young is not the only high profile person that has done this. He is not alone. He is not only in the world, he is of the world and he has brought the scoffing, cynical world into a professing church. Preaching from a bed on a stage, how utterly disgraceful of the man, he has no shame and NO fear or awe of God.
Here are a variety of studies, that are good for the mind and good for the soul regarding judging, have a thorough study of them:
Who Are You To Say?
"The "Who are you to say?" challenge is used by non-Christians and Christians, especially by those who deplore the "heresy hunters" in the church. This rejoinder, though, deftly sidesteps the real issue."
The Untouchables
"Are God's "Anointed" Beyond Criticism?"
TO JUDGE OR NOT TO JUDGE: THE RIGHTS AND WRONGS OF BIBLICAL DISCERNMENT
"It seems clear, since Jesus Himself said, “Judge not,” (Matthew 7:1), that we cannot “judge.” At first glance it appears that Jesus not only forbids judging others, but that He catches Himself in a glaring contradiction."
More here on: Judging
It is some bad news for false teachers and Scripture twisters I hasten to add. Strong, bitter tasting medicine for some I am afraid to say.
BTW, here's some info about Brian Houston of Hillsong Aussie fame on the subject of, wait for it, yes, here it is: "MONEY." You need more of it???? Boloney.
Houstons... We Have A Problem
"Part of CWM's "Unmasked..." series which appears in their Vanguard Magazine. Used by Permission. This article, written by Neil Richardson, appeared in the August 2000 issue of Christian Witness Ministries' Vanguard Magazine. It is an excellent Biblical critique of the book, "You Need More Money", written by Brian Houston, current General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God in Australia and senior pastor of AOG Hills Christian Life Centre, home of fantastically popular Hillsong Music. Houston's indoctrination by Word of Faith and Dominion Theology are clearly revealed in his own writings. His beliefs have been appropriately exposed by Neil Richardson's article."
I like what Paul Washer says to people who flippantly declare:
ReplyDeleteDO NOT JUDGE OR YOU SHALL BE JUDGED!
He replies: "Twist not Scripture lest you be like the devil".
So if after visiting a church (any church) for awhile you find yourself in a cult. What do you do? MAKE A JUDGEMENT!!!!! Of course you do. You JUDGE it for what it is and hopefully get out. Suppose someone comes to you and asks for money for their church. What do you do? You JUDGE what church is it, and for what purpose do they want your money. Suppose you have children that want to join a church you know nothing about....What do you do? You check out the church and the people in it. Give me a break... you MUST JUDGE everyday. Get over it!!!!
ReplyDeleteShould we also throw in here that "money is the root of all kinds of evil?"
ReplyDeleteI believe EGO is taking its toll on some of the megas. I recall one in particular who always wanted to know how good his sermons were. Not nearly as good as he thought they were....in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteOff Topic:
ReplyDeleteThoughts of Frances Turretin > Who is Dr. Ergun Caner?.
So, what is the real story with Dr. Ergun Caner? He has claimed that "We wore keffiyeh; we wore robes" (discussed here) before his conversion. He has claimed this in connection with illustrating how devoted a Muslim he was "as devout as it gets." But the real Ergun Caner is harder to document.
With the assistance of a friend (whose identity will be concealed for now, for his own protection - some of Caner's supporters have been quite unkind), I was able to get access to Dr. Caner's high school yearbooks (don't worry - not his personal copy) from Dr. Caner's high school in Gahanna, OH (named for America's 16th president).
Should we also throw in here that "money is the root of all kinds of evil?"
ReplyDeleteWhy not? It's as logical as Jason's... logic. That one is twisted almost as much as the "do not judge" one. It's the love of money that's the root of all evil.

Doesn't the Bible Say Not to Judge?
ReplyDelete"We receive a lot of email from people who say that we're judging and that the Bible teaches that we should not judge.
Ironically, the people who tell us not to judge are actually guilty of judging us. But, apparently that type of judging is okay but the kind of judging we do isn't Biblical...or so the story goes.
What we really need is a good solid resource that tackles the 'judging' passages in the Bible and what they really teach. We think we've found that in the teaching ministry of Pastor Bob DeWaay. Therefore, we are providing you with a link to two radio programs by DeWaay on the subject of judging.
We agree with DeWaay's exposition of the scriptures on this matter. So, if you're one of those people who are wondering what the Bible really teaches on this subject then we cannot encourage you strongly enough to listen to these programs."
Here is the link. Enjoy.
Why are people at FC so afraid of speaking out against EY?
ReplyDeleteWhat can he do? sue them? Kick them out of FC?
I guess people at FC are more scared of Ed's Wrath then they are God's Wrath.
I guess Jesus would be considered a "hater" too. He def. would have some Q's he'd like EY to answer.
Galatians 6:7
Thank you, New BBC, I was wondering who was going to catch that and, of course, it was you.
ReplyDeleteGood Job!
The Bible declares that during the Millinium that Christians will judge angels I Cor 6:3. Notice the last part of the verse..."how much more things that pertain to this life".
ReplyDeleteIts clear that as Christians we are our brothers keeper. Its sort of like telling those on a speeding train that the bridge is out. Wave it down, ring the bells, blow your horn, put lights out on the tracks, build a fire, but do something otherwise the train will go into the river and lives will be lost. This is what watchdog is doing. He is raising serious questions concerning things that appear in our religious circles that affect our worship and our lives. You can see evidence of this from his statements but others as well that we are under attack not only from those in authority but even by some church leaders (not all of them). Wasn't it the church leaders along with the civil authorities that crucified Jesus? The people even clamored "let his blood be on us and our children" (Matt 27:25). What is such a paradox is that when Judas returned the 30 pieces of silver the rulers would not take it back into the treasury "for it is the price of blood" (Matt 27:5). So it was ok for someone of them to give money to Judas, but afterwards the money was tainted and they wouldn't take it back. Seems to me Judas, as dishonorable as he was, later had a semblance of conscience more than those using him. And THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THE ONES THAT KNEW SCRIPTURE. But of course, their aim was to kill Jesus as he was more popular than they and might lose their positions. In other words Jesus was a threat to their position, power and affluency.
Leaders are to avoid the very appearance of evil. If they don't and someone shines the light on them they can either do something about it, ignore it, or attempt to cover it up for any reason they justify.
This is a classic interview!!!
ReplyDeleteIt bespeaks the way the son of a mega church "king" has grown into a "prince" who lives even higher than his father.
Charles Stanley's son is the same as Ed Young's. I don't think they had a good example of a Servant Minister in their fathers, nor do they have a clue about how this Recession/Depression has sucked the life blood out of the average small business owner or corporate employee.
