Rewind: Ergun Caner in 2007 - A Reminder of Why Caner Fell and Fell Hard

Now that Judge Norman K. Moon has smacked down Ergun Caner, it might be instructive now to go back and listen to the 7-minute clip above, a compilation of excerpts from a 2007 Ohio Free Will Baptist men's retreat where Caner was the featured speaker.

The bald-faced lies and fibs that he told the crowd will amaze you. His use of racial and gender stereotypes will shock you. Listen to these, and you will be reminded of just how bad his exaggerations were. I blogged about these way back in 2010. I provided every one of these Ohio Free Will Baptist sermons to the Liberty University task force that investigated Caner in 2010, at their request. I was threatened by a representative of the Ohio Free Will Baptists to take this audio off the Internet, and they wisely backed off when I told them to go jump in Lake Erie. Within days of my post, they took Caner's audio sermons off their website - but not before I downloaded everyone of them for safe keeping.

This audio is why I fear Caner speaking at youth camps as he does: he does his worst fibbing when the crowd hoots and hollers and gets all worked up over his jokes. The more responsive the crowd is, the more he seems to feed off of them and to get bolder in his tales. One can only imagine what he tells the young skulls of mush that will hoot and holler at his antics like the Free Willers in the audio above - and with Ergun knowing the cameras and audio tapes are not rolling, well, who knows what is said.

And by the way, go read this article by Ken White at the Popehat blog site. It gives an outsider's legal analysis of the Caner lawsuits and the severity of Judge Moon's rebuke of Caner for bringing a lawsuit solely for the purpose of punishing his critics. White summarizes the Caner debacle very well by pointing out that Caner's desire to shut down his critics resulted in wider dissemination of his misdeeds:

"Caner has failed utterly, has been exposed for his censoriousness, and has had his dishonestly much more thoroughly documented and widely publicized than it would have been if he had not been such a vindictive jackass."

Indeed. Caner must have thought he was on a mission of God to bring judgement and wrath to the awful bloggers who were attempting to derail a mighty "Man of God".

Instead, it looks like God was using the bloggers to expose a fraud.

  1. Occasionally I will run across some of the postings and comment threads from several years ago. The characters are quite consistent, the themes are the same and the total disregard for facts (by the Caner supporters) remains.

It is nice to know that while the posted documents may have disappeared, there are still copies. It is also nice to know that there is court approval if those get reposted (as in this blog).

  2. Isn't it extraordinary that people still believe Ergun made misstatements rather than told bare-faced lies. Your clip starts 5 seconds in and continues for approximately 2 mins 15 seconds talking about how Ergun learned about American society through entertainment and sports TV shows from America that got past the Turkish TV censors. Now the problem is that Ergun was born in Sweden and moved from there to the US when he was 3. This is no accidental misstatement by saying the wrong word or phrase. This is an elaborate pre-conceived 2 minute 15 second lie. Ergun I really wish you would wise up, repent and come clean seeking forgiveness from those you have duped and received honorariums from. There were worse sins forgiven in Scripture. Secondly we hear a lot about those who conceal sex abuse among pastors, yet some of those are Ergun's protectors and conceal his lies. God is not mocked.

  3. Also, how is it a misstatement to speak in gibberish and claim you are speaking Turkish?

And how is it a misstatement to say you debated muslims and in fact, never had debated anyone, anywhere on the topic?

And how can you blame your frivolous lawsuits, filed only to harass and intimidate, on anyone but Caner himself.

Yet he was hired by small bush league Baptist colleges after being dismissed from Liberty.

He has done more to harm the cause of Christ than all the "negative, divisive" blogs combined.

And all of this NOT because he is a bad Christian. On the contrary, he is an example of a good Christian. As are those that give him loyalty.

  4. "Rev" Caner came to Gardendale, AL several years ago (2000's) and I was present for the service. He had people whooping and hollering over his pulpit antics and 'religious' humor. I am embarassed to think how we were all sucked in - and sadly I'm amazed that a 'man of God' could stand there and tell those bare faced lies. I do note that in each sermonette of his that I've heard, he tells the same stale lies (jokes) over and over - rehearsed and practically word for word - the same tales. I can't tell you the subject of his sermon I heard those years ago - but I do recall some of his jokes and fabricated childhood antics. Shame on you "Rev" Caner. You are a disgrace to the Southern Baptist name. I have since left the Southern Baptist denomination who has many pulpits occupied with these money grabbing 'religious' men - not all of them - but many of them.

  5. “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.” Acts 20:28-31
Thus spoke Paul of men such as Ergun Caner and the likes of those “pastors” who say nothing, or worse, make silly excuses!
“Churches” that would have overseers (those true Christians who have no unbiblical title) chosen by the Christians of the fellowship would hear warnings. You have warned continuously, and yet, religious organizations have preferred the “silver tongued” entertainment. These religious organizations and the “Christian leaders” that defend the entertainers are just religionists, should not be considered true Christians.
Remember, grievous wolves do not run individually. They belong to a pack, and they kill their prey together, and share the spoil.

  6. Hilarious how Caner tries to do a NY accent when he says Brooklyn, just like he tries to do a Turkish accent when he says Istanbul.

  7. Check out this very good post by a faculty member of another Georgia Baptist College about Caner's Selfie video and SACS. Make sure you read the footnotes at the bottom of the page too.
