Rick Scott at FBC Jax - Brunson Appropriately Preaches on Lying

Rick Scott, Republican candidate for Florida Governor was present at First Baptist Jacksonville today to get the customary mention from the platform and applause, afforded to any political candidate who shows up.

Funny thing is, Scott had to listen to an excellent sermon on lying by pastor Mac Brunson.

This was like Bill Clinton showing up to hear a sermon on adultery.

How appropriate Scott had to listen to a sermon on lying. Scott has been successfully blasting his fellow-Republican Bill McCullum with misleading attack ads, and has taken a double-digit lead in the race. If Scott wins this primary against McCullum it will all but ensure a Democratic win for the Florida governorship, as there is no way Scott will get elected governor in a general election given his troubled past.

You see, Rick Scott was the hotshot back in the late 80s and early 90s who built the nation's largest hospital chain and then saw it all come tumbling down when his company, Columbia/HCA, was found to be defrauding Medicare. Scott was forced to resign, but walked away with millions in cash, and hundreds of millions in stock.

It is really unfathomable, that a millionaire who made his dough when the company he was leading defrauded taxpayers of billions of OUR OWN money, is using that money to blast a guy like Bill McCullum in false attack ads. How fitting though that he had to listen to a hard-hitting sermon on lying, as his company did lie and mislead Medicare to boost their profits.

Are we Republicans and conservatives in Florida really that gullible to give this guy a shot at the governorship? I'm no fan of Bill McCullum, but the fact that this guy has a double-digit lead over McCullum is troubling, and shows that money can buy just about anything in politics. McCullum does have a decent record of public service, and here comes a guy with hundreds of millions and a history of leading a company that defrauded our government and he is headed toward buying a victory in the primary.

Interestingly, news reports are saying that at least one person present for the FBC Jax service today approached Scott and asked him to stop his attack ads against Bill McCullum.

  2. Money buys everything in politics, Tom. There is no "almost," or "maybe," or one last "good one" within the two parties - on any level that will make a real difference (national or state).

There are no "clean" politicians anymore. All of them, in both parties, are bought and sold.

Pick your poison. People wonder why things never get better. We change teams every couple of elections (at least), yet things get worse and worse. It is not because "Them liberals" are foiling the so-called conservatives, it is because both parties work for banks, corporations, and the mega-wealthy.

One current fad has so-called "conservatives" calling Barack Obama a socialist. If it wasn't so wrong, it would be hilarious. Obama is a corporatist, and he proved it when he took your money, my money, your child's money, your grandchild's money, every person reading this blog's money (except for you, Mac - you're 501c exempt, I'm sure) and gave it to banks, insurance companies, financials, mega-wealthy, et-cetera. If that is socialism, then it is reverse-socialism where the wealthy take money from the middle-class.

As for Rick Scott, he will only continue the transfer of wealth from the middle-class to the wealthy. Any of them that have a chance of getting elected will folow the same script, while telling us they are following the script of the team that got them selected.

Suckers. All of us. Suckers. And it will not change until "the wheels come off." Only then, when it is close to being too late, will most of you have any shot at clarity, and finally getting off your duff and doing the right thing. No more of this, "I'm voting for (insert name) because he/she is conservative/liberal." That is what they want you to believe. Real liberty requires much more work.

“We believe that transparency in government activities leads to reduced corruption, better government and stronger democracies,” the organization’s Web site says. “All governments can benefit from increased scrutiny by the world community, as well as their own people. We believe this scrutiny requires information.”

  6. So many scandalous people in the world and this blog has the privilege of exposing as many as they can.

Way to go guys. We need more people willing to search out the sinners and shine a light on their behavior. It's time more people without sin, throw that first stone. Everyone there the day Jesus spoke these words were sinners and could not. I'm glad I am more like you than those you write about.

  7. "shows that money can buy just about anything in politics."

So true. Can anyone remember that Obama originally pledged to use public money and then flip flopped when he realized he could collect almost a billion dollars in campaign funds to win the Presidency?

Sad thing is the news was saying just yesterday that he will probably raise in excess of 1.2 billion for 2012.

No wonder it has always been said that money is the mothers milk of politics.

As far as Scott and McCollum, I say let them debate in a several publicly televised forums across the state and provide documentation for each others claims and then let the voters decide.

  8. Hi Johnny D - cousin Johnny I think it is, right? :)

You are right, I'm afraid. I think that at least we would stay away from guys whose most notable business achievement was to head a company who defrauded the government and resigned. Those are easy calls, but apparently we can't even make those easy ones.

Thy Peace - glad to see you here again. I'm beginning to get a complex, when Thy Peace isn't here posting interesting links.

Billy G - I know you mean it tounge in cheek, but I do agree with you that there should be more people discussing these kinds of issues about candidates...and yes, discussing issues in the church as we do on this blog. Are you casting the stone at us for the "sin" of discussing political candidates and others on this blog?

Anon - I agree, the debates will be interesting. The dates are August 2nd and August 5th, with a possible third one on August 11th.

  9. Good Morning,
"This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in in." . . .

Of course the Watchdog tops my list, but here is just to name a few of my favorite commenters, and a whole lot of you anon's who have befriended WD on this blog. This has become a personal "Bible" study from many of your thoughts. Have learned a lot. To the one who suggest we might be throwing stones, got it wrong, just giving our opinions on issues already reported from reliable sources. No secrets anymore. Have a great day everyone!

    Where are ya Bro Matt?

  13. Thank you, thank you, one and all. Really, thank you.

This is very tough for me... I've had some great difficulties of late, and I've felt God tugging at my heart. I don't know where all this will lead, and I'm very positive I can never go back to a formal church atmosphere, but I have been praying and reading through Scripture again. I know that some of you pray for me (or have at least mentioned praying for me) and for that, I thank you. Keep doing it. I make no promises, and I only tell you this here because at least a few of you have shown me true love and patience.

  14. Johnny - that's the best news I've had in a long time!

Would love to hear about your journey some day, stay in touch and let us know how things are going and if there is anything we can do to help!

  15. And yes, cousin T., I believe you have it correct. Never forget that only your family comes here and makes multiple posts so as to give the illusion that this blog gets many more readers than Mac's.

You probably shouldn't post this, Tom. Mac or a deacon will copy the above and send it out to the deacon board - being careful to leave this part out about how firmly my tongue is in my cheek.

  16. I believe I heard on radio this afternoon around 1:00 p.m. this remark " this part of the Rush Limbaugh program is brought to you by First Baptist Academy". Thank you FBA if that is true as Rush is my favorite radio programs.

  17. Johnny D...Prayer works. The Holy Spirit is and will bring to your remembrance the Love of Christ, the fact that His blood will save you, and that some people really do care about you spiritually. Hang in there buddy. Remember this...one thing once you are HIS, He will never leave thee or forsake thee. God bless.

  20. We will have no real change until we take the money out of elections.

I never thought I'd hear myself say this but we probably would've been better off with Ralph Nader years ago.

  21. LA. GOOD POST. Yes we would have had safer and better cars and more than likely no green ones. The Military would have taken care of the homefront, and we would have had a balanced budget and the same health care. I vote for Nader as well.

  24. Anon 9:31. Its no joke, I heard it yesterday around 1:00pm. No fooling. It probably doesn't cost more than $2500 per spot I'm guessing. But it is a "hook" and a good place to put your money since a lot of Jacksonville area people listen to Rush every day.
