Ergun Caner at Truett McConnell Chapel Service: Makes Another Racial Stereotype Joking About "Gay Haitian at a Bloodbank"

Ergun Caner preached the chapel service at Truett-McConnell College on March 21, 2012. Ergun's brother Emir is the president of TMC.

Caner's sermon was another one in which he rails about the evils of people who criticize pastors. Caner allegorizes the story of Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, making it a story about how men of God are to respond to church critics.

Above is a very brief video clip of Caner making a reference to a "gay Haitian at a blood bank" near the end of his sermon. Caner has made racial slurs or used racial stereotypes regarding Hispanics over the years (here and here and here), this is just another example.

How sad that Ergun Caner chooses to utter these kinds of racial stereotypes in his sermons anywhere, much less at a chapel service in front of aspiring pastors. Caner is a poor example for young preachers or young Christians at all, but his friends and family still allow Caner access to the eyes and ears of young people at chapels and even at high school camps.

Next we'll take a look at just how evil are those who dare to criticize the men of God who are doing great things - according to Ergun Caner.

Just wondering. Does Ergun Caner believe that gay Haitians need salvation?

I am so tired of this arrogant jerk. I wish he would just fade out of the ministry and stop corrupting the minds of students and the pastors he trains.

He is not going anywhere. He has powerful friends and thousands of followers. Those that do not defend him refuse to speak up.

Caner is just an ignorant opportunist. Using racial/ethnic slurs and stereotypes plays rather well in Georgia. He will not "just fade out of the ministry" as long as people keep proping him up. As the great American philosopher, Forrest Gump, said, "stupid is as stupid does." Plain and simple: contempoary evangelicalism is filled with stupid people; "never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups" (seen on a bumper sticker recently). Keep the pressure on, WD.

He is the epitome of a SBC Pastor who is clueless; unfortunately, he s one of many that our denomination suffers from (frag)

sad. just sad

All I can say is that he chose the right profession. Pretty much any other group would have expelled him by now for the embarrassment he has caused through his racial slurs and lack of integrity.

Why HASN'T God sent some bears to eat up the critics?

I still don't understand why more of the good men who are preachers let people like Caner help the whole preacher profession look very negative. He is a representative of their profession. Maybe they feel there's not much they can do. Obviously there are enough people that love hearing the speeches of the Caners of this world. That also shows the gullibility of many in the Baptist camp. Where's the discerning powers these Christians are supposed to have?

What do Baptists see in the Caners which causes them to put these guys in charge or invite them to preach? They are not engaging speakers. They are not Spirit-filled expositors of scripture.

I detect nothing in the Caners which indicates Godly leadership ability. They don't even appear to be well-educated. Why would any self-respecting Christian follow these guys anywhere?

Interesting-- Team Pyro has a post up called "Celebrity Pastors and the Roots of American Evangelical Dysfunction".

http://teampyro.blogspot.com/2012/03/celebrity-pastors-and-roots-of-american.html

One the the people highlighted is J Frank Norris, whom founded the college where Caner now works. It goes to show you the mentality of the people there for them to have such a history and hire someone like Caner. Ugh. Dog, I don't know if you read Team Pyro but they constantly rail on celebrity pastors.

Rick,

Honestly the only answer I can think of to your questions about why people hire Caner is that he is entertaining and they know people will come listen because of that. Which is really sad that many in the pew want to be entertained rather than actually learn something.

Where can I find a video of the full sermon?

As a former Census enumerator, I have to offer one correction- Caner's offensive comments about Hispanics aren't racial slurs, but rather ethnic slurs. That's because, according to the Census Bureau, Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. Hispanic origin and race are separate and distinct concepts and Hispanics can be of any race.

You took this way out of context.

He was not slurring against Haitians or against Gays, he was making a point about his grandmother and her love for the Lord. It is sad that you would slam his grandmother and his family in such a horrible way.

Please stop this...You act like you are on MSNBC.

Ergun Caner is the Bill Maher of the pulpit IMO.

Come on Dawg. That is a real stretch to label this as racial stereotyping. You are trying to spin what he said out of context and listening to the video it is NOT what you say.

I'm not criticizing his grandmother. If anything HE is criticizing his grandmother, saying that she cared more about Emir than Ergun!

Caner has on multiple occasions stereotyped Hispanics. He did it at FBC Jax, he has joked about how if he adopts kids he wants them to be Mexicans because his roof needs repairs and he has a large yard.

This is just more of the same.
