Mac has taken his doctrine of "storehouse tithing" to a new level.
According to Mac, God is apparently punishing us for not tithing.
We need to fork over 10% of our income to our churches, and then God will get us out of this economic recession.
Mac is now saying that our extended economic recession is the result of Christians not forking over 10% of their income to their church.
Here is Mac's quote from his Sunday service on 8/23/09:
"Have you ever stopped to think that this whole economic mess in America is not really the cause of Wall Street or the cause of the White House or the cause of Congress, but it might be an act of God on this nation? Would you agree with that, that this very well may be the judgement of God on this nation - the economic difficulty?
Let me give you one that you're not gonna amen:
Have you ever thought that the reason God's put us in an economic difficulty in this nation is because God's people won't prove him with their tithe? Well, more of you amened it than I thought. But I guarantee you somebody's not going to like it. I'm not so sure we're not in the situation we're in because God's people WILL not prove God with the tithe."
There you have it! The solution to our economic woes is right there.
The only person that could make such a ridiculous statement is someone who is out of touch with the suffering this economic recession has wrought on innocent people, even Christians. Recessions in America hurt people and families - it even reaches to developed countries as aid goes down. Its not a stretch to say that people die in developing countries as the result of economic recession in America.
And Mac blames it all on Christians who don't believe his storehouse tithing doctrine. God is exacting a punishment because Christians aren't forking over 10% of their incomes to their mega church to support the lavish lifestyle of their pastors.
That is shameful, and its a blight on the Southern Baptist Convention, and an embarrassment to the city of Jacksonville for such nonsense to be coming forth from the pulpit of FBC Jacksonville.
Did I just say that?
You better believe I did.

I guess I was trying to understand why someone would proof text Romans 1 (the background for the beginning of the argument) for the topic under discussion: Grace. Wouldn't Romans 6-10 speak to that better?
Romans 6
1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
You write:
"The Bible says what it means and means what it says... So do I."
But it can mean a lot of wrong things when proof texting. That is the problem.

"Judging from your reactions I would say my comments about blue collar workers and all the other thoughts were right on target."
Why would you think there is something dishonorable about blue collar workers? Our Lord in the flesh was a carpenter. Paul made tents and Peter was a fisherman.
1 Corin 1
27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence.

Ok,
What does blue collar and making less than 50,000 a year have to do with anything. Could you explain.

IN ADDITION TO PASTOR CHRIS' AND WHAT HE SAID MAY I JUST PARTICULARY SAY "THANK YOU" TO ALL OF OUR MISSIONARIES WHO DON'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO THE $50,000.00 ANNUAL SALARY - ALSO TO YOU PASTORS WHO WERE "CALLED" TO SERVE THE LORD WITH PASSIONATE HEARTS AND NOT FOR MONEY!
GOOD FOR YOU! HAPPY NOW THAT YOU DID HIT A NERVE?
YOU PROBABLY ARE NOTHING BUT A DADDY'S BOY OR LIVING OFF OF GRANDADDY'S MONEY AND NEVER WORKED A DAY IN YOUR LIFE, ONE OF OUR PVB KIDS PERHAPS - I'VE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF LIVING AMONGST YOU. (and still do).
I never said there was anything wrong with being a blue collar worker. I was just pointing out some of the characteristics of the bloggers on this blog.
I do know this though--I have never seen a person of means who is successful and been raised properly, say things about a pastor like you people are saying about Mac.
Right or wrong, it doesn't justify your pathetic comments.
"I never said there was anything wrong with being a blue collar worker. I was just pointing out some of the characteristics of the bloggers on this blog. "
Could you point out these 'blue collar' characteristics for us?
Obviously you do think there is something wrong with being a blue collar worker or you would not have made the comparison in the first place and used the descriptor as a form of insult.

"I do know this though--I have never seen a person of means who is successful and been raised properly, say things about a pastor like you people are saying about Mac."
It is my opinion that Mac is a fat bald charlatan with a Napoleonic complex.
You have NOW “seen” a person of means who is successful and was raised QUITE right say something politically incorrect about a so-called pastor.
Now, have your maid bring you a nice evening toddy and make sure the chauffer parks right in front of the church on Sunday so all can see how people of means lives.
The Wartburg Watch > our assessment on the Problems at FBC Jax+tom rich > Subpoena this blog.
Recently, Dee had the honor and privilege of speaking with Florida State Attorney Angela Corey. How did this conversation come about you are probably wondering. Dee called the State Attorney’s office, concerned about the freedom to dissent for religious bloggers. The State of Florida is blessed to have such a responsive representative of the law! Angela Corey spent a lengthy amount of time explaining her understanding of this case. She extolled the local law enforcement officers throughout the state who have a yeoman’s task to uphold the freedom and safety of the citizenry. Here is a list of her points.
- Angela Corey was not the state attorney when the subpoenas were issued.
- She feels an obligation to protect high profile members of the community who might be at higher risk due to their public profile.
- Thousands of these types of investigative subpoenas are issued every year.
- However, when there is no criminal activity, these subpoenas are closed.
- Tom Rich was found to be not involved in any criminal activity.
- Tom’s name was given to the church administrator as a courtesy so they could keep an eye on him if he was ever present on the property.
- Tom’s name was supposed to be kept confidential and was not to be announced to any large group of people.
- When Tom Rich’s name was released, it was NOT to be announced from the pulpit in a meeting of deacons/trustees and/or pastors with 50 or more individuals present. Ms. Corey expressed surprise at this action.
- Her predecessor would need to be contacted to establish the reason he allowed for the subpoenas. Ms. Corey was told that “stolen mail” and “pictures being taken of Mrs. Brunson” were the reasons for the subpoena.
- Ms. Corey stated that their main concern was that Tom Rich, by his blog, could incite some sort of retribution against the pastor. This is very important and we will refer back to this later in the post.
- She confirmed that all subpoenas under her administration must clearly state the potential criminal activity since this was not clearly spelled out in the previous subpoenas.
- Ms. Corey could not give me any reason why the subpoena was obtained against a blogger who was critical against Bellevue Baptist Church in Tennessee. I told her that, apparently, Pastor Brunson is friendly with that pastor Steve Gaines.
Pastor Chris: Do not look for a response as this person believes he/she is above us all. We who support the WD are just poor people and don't matter. You get this type of rhetoric from abusive employers who believe they are the Gift of God. What they don't realize is, they get sick and die just like the rest of us and guess what? Their money does them no good and they leave it ALL!!! So sad. Many attempt to repent and resolve all their former traits on their deathbeds. They are the type who cannot tolerate openess, love, and kindness as it is not in their makeup. They tend to be shallow and offer little comfort to those around them. In other words, they have the bighead right now. But, life has a way of equalizing things. You probably have heard the saying, "What goes around comes around".
Matt, your "corrections" are becoming very tiresome. Stating what you will on a topic is fine with me, but this constant CORRECTING another, as the bible authority and the one who knows all, is very aggravating, at least to me. Please do not assume the rest of us know nothing about our bibles, and therefore must be corrected and instructed. Thanks.
Anon,5:00 and prior defamer of blue collar workers.
IF you work, and should you perhaps lose your job or "funding", you might be fortunate to acquire a "blue collar job and be glad to get it so you can continue eating.
"do know this though--I have never seen a person of means who is successful and been raised properly, say things about a pastor like you people are saying about Mac"
May I introduce you, then, to the Wartburg Watch. Those women are more educated and well-spoken then you could dream of being! And they can probably kick your butt, too!
Matt is a tremendous contributor to this blog. I don't think he "corrects" and I think he has been pretty humble and level-headed. Many of us have enjoyed his posts for a long time and look forward to them. We all encourage him. Lately his posts have been few and far between and I know I miss him when we don't hear from him.
Just to answer your questions:

I would venture to say that the vast majority of those who post on here are:
* Not members of FBC, Jax. I am - for the past 25 years
* Do not attend church regularly or at all. Until recently (because of the abuses), I was in Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night, and Thursday for choir attendance. BTW - going to church does not make you a Christian.
* Do not tithe. I have given tithes AND offerings on a consistent basis.
* Are in no positions of leadership if they do attend church. I was a care leader. Serving in leadership does not make you a better scale of Christian.
* Are usually among the group of people who complain about everything. I live a quite happy and contented life. I do, however, object to being ripped off.
* Are blue collar types. No. I work in a very high tech industry. I am skilled enough in my job that I do not post an embarrassingly substandard resume to LinkedIn. BTW - it is blue-collar types.
* Probably do not make over $50,000 a year. My income well exceeds 50K. Think the upper end of the five-digit range. 50K is a familiar sounding number to be the dividing line of "worthiness". Most folks in our congregation do not have a family member than can hire them straight out of college, with no useful experience, and a substandard resume to a job paying 50K or more a year. Sad part is, there are staff members at the church that make barely over minimum wage with no chance of a raise.
* Usually complain about anyone in authority at any level in their lives. I am quite respectful of authority. Respect must be earned - not demanded. Respect is easily lost and quite difficult to recover. I can treat anyone respectfully - even a convict - but that does not mean that I respect them.
Sad commentary isn't it?
September 1, 2009 7:12 AM
Yes. It is a sad commentary that our church produces such an attitude. Income, status, leadership, and church attendance have absolutely nothing to do with salvation. This is the way of thinking that has given FBCJ a bad reputation in Jax. This is the unloving mind-set that is driving away the faithful. I am gone now for all intents and purposes. Nothing left but moving a letter.
Being that many of us that are in a higher income bracket (read higher giving unit), it would do the existing members good not to insult those in the below 50K bracket. You are going to need every penny they give to keep the A/C running.
"Yes. It is a sad commentary that our church produces such an attitude. Income, status, leadership, and church attendance have absolutely nothing to do with salvation. This is the way of thinking that has given FBCJ a bad reputation in Jax."
A VERY GOOD POINT. But it was the Shepherd and the Judge who put the icing on the cake for our (FBCJ) reputation with their "thinking" in The Florida Times Union.
I'm sure the "blue collar" comment individual has already signed up for the important "River Mission Trip" with the Brunson family and their "friends" who travel with them. Note - here we go again, another Holiday and the Good Shepherd "Gone Again" leaving us with "Yet Again" with another special speaker that of course will be paid for out of the budget!
Tom,
In determining the validity and trustworthiness of your blog, have you ever had any of the following post on here:
* A member of a key committee at FBC, Jax.
* A trustee of FBC, Jax.
* A staff member of FBC, Jax.
* A deacon at FBC, Jax.
If not, it seems that most of what we are reading is pure speculation and complaining. We need to hear from someone who can actually give us facts (other than your age-old complaining about Mac's house, salary and family.)
The saddest thing of all is that noone who posts on here actually knows Mac's salary. Its all pure speculation.
"This is the way of thinking that has given FBCJ a bad reputation in Jax"
FBD is the SAME way. No difference. Perhaps that's why Mac transitioned so easily from D to J.
So you're saying working at Wicker gym isn't relevant experience?? (laughing my head off!!)
Excellent work September 1, 2009 10:14 PM.

THE ABOVE "YES men/women "talk" to answer your question . . .better word would be "GOSSIP" within their own club (and what they say is passed on to others)
I for one as a member of the church would go to an "outside pastor" if I ever needed spiritual counseling (which I don't) before I would ever go to one of the above mentioned.
There is no respect for the word "confidentiality with the above name positions as you see they have no respect for the word "confidentiality".

Thanks, friend.
I realize that I might offend some but when someone starts preaching 'grace' for a child sexual predator and never once mentions repentance, protection for the innocent children, civil justice, etc, we should all be worried.
From what I am hearing and reading this concept of cheap grace in the church has been protecting many predators.
Many think they are being loving by blanket forgiveness (reconcilation) without true repentance. But the problem is bigger than that. When a professing believer is a sexual predator, we should conclude that person is not showing fruit of being Born Again. Why pretend one can be Born Again and molest kids at the same time? Seems that many do. This is where 1 John comes in as an excellent way to understand the difference between walking in the light and walking in the dark.
But many have been taught that is judging and a sin. With that errant doctrine, is it no wonder our churches look like the world? How to keep the Bride pure if we do not judge within it? Paul tells us not to judge the 'outside' world but those in the Body.
If we do not care about the spiritual damage done to innocent ones being molested, let's at least care about the one who shows no fruit of salvation yet claims it.
Matt
"I do know this though--I have never seen a person of means who is successful and been raised properly, say things about a pastor like you people are saying about Mac. "
no one should critisize the king? hmmmm. Wonder if you ever critsized Bill Clinton? Obama?
Are pastors a special anointed class of Christians? Such as the temple veil was NOT torn in two on the cross and we still have a earthly priest who represents God?
I am sorry you missed the teaching on the Holy Priesthood. They no longer teach it in the SBC. It does nto fit well with a special anointed class of professional Christians who are above others in the Body.
That is ok about Blue Collar and making under 50,000 a year. THey make up the majority of the people who comprise the SBC and give to the churches. They are the one's who are more likely to give 10% also. THey are the ones who give their time and effort. They are ones who are teaching classes in the average church on Sunday morning. ALso That is the average preacher who is preaching on Sunday morning. Sir I am sure you are a guy who loves Jesus and agrees that we all stand on equal ground at the foot the cross.
We live in a country who has a bone to pick with the upper class which is a bad thing and hope we never move to socialism. Your remarks only adds fuel to that fire. THe odds are that you are just trying to get under the skin of some. I do not know why I even post. I am not against or For Dr. Mac. I enjoy his sermons and if a moment of weakness has come upon him then I pray for him. As a brother in Christ I want the best for him, you, and Watchdog. Odds all I will not get to meet any of yall personally on this side of glory. I get the feeling I rather meet some of yall after we have been perfected and you can say the same about me. We all have our quirks. Until then God bless and have a great day.
Pastor Chris.
Matt - I second the comments of the anon, you are a tremendous contributor to this blog.
About the sexual predator comments made about grace to the sexual predator...as I said yesterday, I am not at all interested in discussing this man's problems on the blog. However, it is instructive for readers of this blog to consider how leadership responded to this man (under the leadership of Vines and Howard and Pigg) and how leadership responded to me (under the leadership of Brunson, Blount, and Soud) FBC Jax did NOT issue trespass papers against this sexual predator's wife. Their first official "ministry" to the man and his wife was not to show up at their doorstep on the eve of Thanksgiving to deliver a list detailing sins and demands to appear before a tribunal of 6 men in the church before allowed entrance to the church. This man's wife was not barred from the church property and refused entrance to accompany her children to church. Jerry Vines did not call him names in the news paper like "sociopath" or "mentally unbalanced" when asked about him by the media, but instead reached out, visited this man personally, and ministered to this family.
A.C. Soud did NOT read a "Deacon's Resolution" condemning those in leadership who molest young boys, and tell everyone they would aggressively confront child molestors. They didn't put up on their website the Deacon's Resolution about the strong stand they will take against molestors, but boy against those who "unjustly criticize" their pastor and staff, Soud was out in front leading the charge to stop this ghastly "sin" in the camp.
I must have missed Soud's statements in the media calling the molestor a derogatory name - why didn't Sound call him "the deviant that he is"....or "the sick man that he is"?
But its a new day at FBC Jax under the leadership of Brunson and Trustee president Soud.
Apparently the sin of blogging about a pastor and pointing out his ridiculous assertions from the pulpit, complaining about his land gift and nepotism and Holy Land Trips and cruises, encouraging people to withhold gifts if they disagree with the way money is being solicited, is a sin that requires immediate bannishment from the church, for the blogger and for the wife.
But again, the molestor is not blue collar, he makes much more than $50,000, and he did hold important offices in the church.
My plumber obviously makes more than 50 grand a year. He also spends quite a bit of time as a fundraiser for the local childrens hospital.
I was just thinking about all the blue collars who make white collar work not only more comfortable but possible:
Auto workers
Mechanics
HVAC workers
Plumbers
Carpenters
Construction workers
Road workers
Roofers
Factory workers
Sanitation workers
I praise God for these folks who keep us cool in summer, warm in winter, our cars running, our toilets flushing, our roads drivable, our roofs from leaking, take away our trash and who build our homes.
So, please do not look down on these folks, thank them.
Readers - on the $50k and blue collar comment...we know who it is that posts these comments (he is not as anonymous as he thinks he is) but I won't embarrass him by revealing his name. Just trust me, he is young, he is immature, and he doesn't know any better. He is not representative of the people of FBC Jax - although, sad to say, he is a product of their ministry.
Matt - I agree with you. I think you do a fine job of clarifying doctrine and correcting poor theology. There are some points where I can understand the existence of disagreements; but I think you are one of the most reliable contributors on matters of verse exposition, church workings, etc. More often than not your assessments are on target.
Signed,
Under $50K But Not Blue Collar
To the anon who claims great riches makes one religious: You may have forgotten the rich young ruler, the man who built bigger barns, the rich man who ate the choicest of foods and fed bread crumbs to a beggar. A lot of (advantaged) men who were brought up by wise parents, have discovered their downfall comes when they trust riches in place of trusting the SAVIOR!! Sometimes, tragedy strikes and it is the SAVIOR that rescues not the riches!!!
The amount of money one makes has absolutely nothing to do with how an individual develops his/her personality, gifts of the spirit, and attitudes. Most rich men that I have met have very small characters. Many times, it is when they lose their money that God is truly able to use them for HIS Glory. The widows who had nothing in the Bible are the most tangible evidence that having the spirit rather than relying on riches is the greatest example of character. The widow who threw in the two mites (all her living), according to the Lord, gave more than those who threw in many larger coins. While they made a lot of "noise" she silently showed her faith. Additionally, all the disciples were basically bankrupt. The prophets and other bible writers were as well. Don't forget how many were martyred not made rich!!! This idea of trusting in riches is disturbing and fatal to the soul. I would suggest, in a future convention, that preachers make a point, indeed pass a "resolution" as to why it says in the bible that MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL. They SHOULD share why success is NOT having money, especially, in the Laodicean Church age. I think an emphasis should be placed by preachers on HUMILITY. True humility not false, as false humility is easily "seen through". YOU cannot take riches with you. Neither can THEY. YOU will leave it all. And so will THEY. Of what benefit is money, when one stands at the Judgement Seat? One will give an account then, and it won't be a bank balance!!! TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!!
"To the anon who claims great riches makes one religious"
I don't know that the imbecile thought the above necessarily. More that riches make you worthy to be heard. Otherwise, you're just jealous. Or something...
I suppose that having money in these days when a lot of people are financially strapped or unemployed is worthy to be praised for the egocentric clown of our day. Why not give up some of it and get down here where most of the world lives. I know the average per capita income for many households is under $35,000. In one community in Ga it is less than $23,000. You sir are a snob!!!
To add to your comment about the difference in treatment of you and a convicted criminal...
Lewis and his wife had dinner at some local restaurants with Edmonds and Dana on several occasions after his initial arrest.
My, my, how things have changed.
"I would say my comments about blue collar workers and all the other thoughts were right on target.
Your comments prove me to be true"
No they prove you to be tacky.
I hate to disappoint you all but I am the one who wrote the comment about the blue collar workers.
I am not young and I am not immature and I am also NOT a product of FBC, Jax.
Seems like the truth sure prodded some of you to action but as usual, I see there is noone posting who actually knows figures about what is happening at FBC, Jax. You are basically a bunch of malcontents who think you actually know something when you don't.
I disagree.
We know who you are.
You are young, immature, and you don't know any better.
And that is what you are until you identify yourself by your name, city, and state....and by your income, color of your collar (or color of your neck will suffice), and what positions you hold in your church.
:)
Former FBC insider are you saying it was a good thing for the Howards to go out to eat with the Edmounds? I really am trying to understand your point. As someone who was abused as a child by someone in authority at my church I find it offensive that one of my pastors and the pastors of some of the abused teenagers would go out to eat with the man accused of abusing them.
I also saw FBC Pastors out to eat with Edmounds after he had reached his plea agreement. That is when I started praying for a change in leadership at FBC.
Yes Edmounds is a sinner who says he is saved just like me. yes we should forgive him but his victims pay a price their entire life and should not a pastor support those victims over their abuser When I saw them out laughing and acting like best friends that was too much for me. I have no problem with them giving him councel but not at a resturant with half the staff there acting like best friends. What message does that send to those kids and their families?
Whats that WD, have you violated someones privacy rights?
There are two super egos. 1. The wealth ego. It believes it can buy its way wherever it so desires and money and fortune is its God. 2. The intelluctual ego. It believes it is always right and cannot stand for dissent of its opinion at any moment in time.
Unfortunatley, most of these two egos are rarely saved as they would have to admit that they were sinners and that would never do.
Hey Matt, since dog has moved on from this post, I don't know if you'll see this, but you too are one of those guys that makes me remember and consider how much I enjoyed being a Christian. Let me assure you: that's saying something.

Again you misunderstood my subject matter. So...when I claimed you were correcting my comments, I realized you AGAIN, did not understand what I said. I can't believe this has happened TWICE. I must not get my point across clearly, or your must choose to use it for a dissertation on a subject you like. Otherwise I do enjoy your comments. But not when you take mine out of context. Hope this is clear. (joke)

No Anon,
I was only remembering the very big difference in how "chummy" the molester and family were treated by staff. And then how "outed" and served with subpoenas, and served trespass warnings that Watchdog and his wife were treated.
Just seems like a huge difference in how a brother is being treated for such a lesser 'offense'.
I'm sorry for what you've experienced. I make no light of it.
I agree with you. It was a sickening sight for me as well.

Must have been another anon. Perhaps you guys could use a number or something? It sure would help.

To All Concerned; December 23, 2009
Several weeks ago Tim Guthrie said that he was beginning a long series on tithing and would handle all questions and comments in detail. See our Tithing-Study Group at Yahoo.
Guthrie is part of the Eklund Stewardship Foundation and the SBC Today site. He posted the same comments on both.
A friend of mine, Gary Arnold, and I posted questions sand comments on his site. Guthrie encouraged us to be patient and stay tuned because he was going to answer our objections to tithing.
We posted 2-3 times at the most before he decided not to continue his promised long sessions of answers. Worse yet, he did not post out comments and biblical arguments.
That, my friends, is how the SBC wants to face the doctrine of tithing. Their stewardship defender, Kenneth Hemphill, did the same thing after he greatly rebutted my CBS TV comments. I was not allowed to defend myself.
They are bold to pound the pulpit with lies to those who are willing to be manipulated but they will not face their accusers who know how to correct interpret God's Word.
Praise God for SBC leaders like Dr. Daniel Akin, Dr. Andreas Kostenberger and Dr. David Black at SEBTS who will stand up and be counted. And praise God for people like Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Craig Blomberg and Dr. David Croteau who will stand up and be counted in our religious leadership.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All

Tom Rich, I guess Mac Brunson did not realize that there are to Be NO TITHES collected during a Shemitah year. Then you have the is co-laborer in the LORD saying seminary students are poor for not tithing.
