Enough of my opinions about things, right? Let's take the advice of many Christians and get back to the Bible. With so much doubt and cynicism by "the world" and so many "attacks" on Christianity, let's take the advice of some loud and arrogant pastors, and "take it up wit da book!"
Unfiltered verses. Without comment. Without opinion. Because the Bible is God's word. It is inerrant. It is infallible. And it says what it means and it means what it says. And God never changes. And if you don't like it, you don't have a problem with me, you got a problem with God. No Priest needed. No seminarian needed. No Greek or Hebrew needed. The King James Version Bible says it, so why don't you do what it says. Amen? Amen! We'll start with some scriptures about children. Stay tuned for my next post, which will be verses on Biblical marriage.
Bible Verses About Children
Children who refuse to obey their parents must be executed.
Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place: And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die; so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. Deuteronomy 21:18-21
- He that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death. Exodus 21:15
- He that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death. Exodus 21:17
- Children who mock their parents will have their eyes plucked out by ravens and eaten by eagles.
- The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. --Proverbs 30:17
- God killed all the firstborn children in an entire country.
- The LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon.... And there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead. Exodus 12:29-30
- Sometimes God kills children for misbehaving.
- And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 2 Kings 2:23-24
- Someday God will force parents to eat their own children.
- And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. Lev 26:29
- And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters. Deuteronomy 28:53
- And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend. Jeremiah 19:9
- And then there's this statement, found in the Bible:
- Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones. Psalm 137:9

Bud - Thanks. I'm just "getting back to the Bible" for wisdom and guidance for my daily life.
Well, there is no discipline in my own walk that is not dependent on "abiding in My Word". Our churches are filled with token lip service, our curriculum designed to focus on "us", and our preaching often "self-centered" rather than authentically "Christ-centered".
I appreciate your call for the primacy of Scripture in our lives.
(And if you have connections in Nashville, share it with them, too, why don't you? LOL.)

I knew I could depend on God's word to get rid of pesky, troublesome and loudmouthed children from my life ... God is so good ... I can get rid of other people's children too ...

I am missing the social context as to why these children removal verses are current ... Is something happening that I am missing? Is this related to posts at Wartburg Watch and Spiritual Sounding Board posts?

Corbin - Very offensive indeed. It's a good thing NO ONE takes it that seriously to follow everything it teaches.
I remember watching Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect" show with Jerry Falwell as a guest. Maher and others were talking about controversial things in the Bible. Falwell said that "reading the Bible is like eating a fish: You have to pick out the flesh from the bone." It shocked everyone, including me! Bill Maher was speechless for a moment (a rare thing for him) before saying he was happy for Falwell's view. The founder of the Moral Majority and Liberty University publicly admitted that complete Bible inerrancy was WRONG. I didn't see a big backlash and not long after, Liberty U. started relaxing some of its policies like letting men and women wear shorts. It makes me wonder if Falwell had lived longer if many of his other views would have mellowed too?

Something wrong with those Bible verses?? Again more straw, I see. Something that is forgotten is the seriousness of those verses and also that there was court and Jewish leadership in those courts who evaluated everything. The weight of those courts most often seek grant to mercy if all possible. (I hope you see that Jesus as why he was ONE who was speaking in Perfect Authority, he did not distort the Torah's intent. In many Jewish writings and other texts you will find that the death penalty was something that was often not sought after. You got to remember that English literalists with the Bible actually distort much of it. The Bible is a Jewish book written by yes, mostly Jewish men. Let's keep it in that context to begin with and do away with this straw.
Isn't the writer of Psalm 137 mourning, crying out to his captors, saying in verse 9 I hope the evil that was done to us is done to you?
That's the message I got when I read the entire Psalm.
Thankfully I've never heard that verse pulled out as a truth for living life, and if ever I did, I'd not be warming that pew again.
Anon September 9 at 9:00 pm - Absolutely yes, there are many passages about children in the New Testament. Some are very beautiful. Which is my point about posting these verses. Let's "pick and choose" to follow those teachings in the New Testament about children, and don't get hung up on those hurtful verses in the Old Testament. In other words, let's not pretend that it's ALL God-breathed and useful for teaching. Or that it's inerrant, or that any of us follow and live out all of its teachings. We have to pick and choose. We all do. So its hypocritical and nonsensical to insist that a man, woman or child is not a Christian if they don't believe it all.
